Pictures of Us is a gritty teenage love triangle set in the 80's.

When Nadima’s father uproots the family to move across the country, she and her twin brother Dastaan are angry and resentful. Navigating the drama of high school with all of its anxieties and insecurities is a highly charged emotional time in the life of a teen. Add to that the constant tension created by an ultra-traditional religious father who does not tolerate behavior that he believes brings shame to the family. When a devilishly charming boy named Donald takes Nadima under his wing on the first day of school, she is thrown into a world that her controlling parents would never approve of.

Enter Jack, who has his own family issues. He is the product of a broken home with a father who is a drunk, a brawler, and a womanizer. In spite of his issues, Jack is a good guy. He knows Donald is a lowlife with no respect for the girls he dates. Jack begins to develop feelings for Nadima and believes Donald is leading her down a dark road. Things come to a head when Nadima is assaulted at a local hangout. Jack rescues her and blames Donald. Jack and Nadima develop a strong connection through their worlds begin to spiral out of control. Sadly, Nadima loses both Jack and her brother Dastaan. In the end, all she has left are a collection of photographs, a sketch pad… and a baby who bears the name of the boy who captured her heart.

Casting

Characters (Set in the 80's we're looking for long-haired males and some hairstyles typical to the time period.)

Nadima- (Principle) A teenage Afghan girl. Approximately 17 years old and 5,2"-5,4 in height, when introduced at the beginning of the film and about 15 throughout the rest. (Scenes in the past and present) She’s rather petite and pretty. She’s lived with an abusive father (mentally) and a detached mother. She is also a major support mechanism for her twin brother Dastaan. With the family relocating to a new city, we get the feeling she’s eager for a change and ready to take chances. Nadima is also an avid photographer and never caught without her Polaroid camera.

Jack Dombrowski- (Principle) About 5,5"-5,6," he's a “keeps to himself” kind of guy. He’s 16 years old and often misunderstood as moody or angry. He’s actually got a heart of gold. He’s loyal to family and friends but keeps a rather tight circle. Jack is also the product of a broken home and an abusive father (physically and mentally). He’s an artist (comic book creator), drummer, martial artist, and avid weight lifter. He doesn’t make trouble, but will never shy away from it. A young Keanu Reeves, Matt Damon type.

Donald- (Principle) Jack' best friend, about 5,7"-5,9" in height. Donald is cocky and self-assured. Not obnoxious or loud, but confident. He sees himself as a ladies’ man.He’s approximately 25, though spends much of his time hanging out at the high school. He’s sneaky and deceptive and always playing an angle. Average height and build and dressed in denim with “kung fu” accents (slippers / Asian-influenced shirt). This is the era of Bruce Lee and at the height of the martial arts craze. Both Jack and Donald are part of a fringe group. Not jocks or the popular “in” crowd. They are loners, but well known. He is also a comic strip artist into Sword and Sorcery and Kung Fu as well as an avid weight lifter.

Dastaan Khan- (Principle) Dastaan is Nadima’s twin brother. He’s rather slim and frail… a tortured soul, literally hangingby a thread. He’s suffered physical and emotional abuse at the hands of a father who sees his being gay as a shame that blackens the family name. Dastaan is riddled with guilt and unbearably lonely after a forced break up and relocation across the country. His sister Nadima is his only lifeline.

Valerie- (5 scenes) 16-17, average height. and the stereotypical “Mean Girl”. She is more of a vehicle to make the story happen. Pretty and popular and perfect to draw all the pieces of the story together. She’s a manipulator and one who enjoys pushing everyone’s buttons. The leader of her own little clique.

Vernon- (4 scenes)  Valerie’s Boyfriend/Jack’s Nemesis – 15 – 20 years. Very tall – Athlete Tall and imposing athletic build. The stereotypical meathead “jock”. He settles problems through bullying and fighting. Football player/ wrestler. Not overly bright or articulate.

Theresa- (5 scenes) Friend of Jack & Nadima – Tall, thin. quirky and geeky, but cute. Theresa is Valerie’s friend and nemesis. She seems to fix everything. Valerie breaks. She’s got a lifelong crush on Jack and is his voice of reason. I see Theresa as being very pretty, but retro and alternative in appearance. Sort of a Molly Ringwald (Pretty in Pink) or Julia Styles (10 things I hate about you). Kind of a young Joan Cusack.

Rosanne- (4 scenes) Female, 16-17 years of age & BIPOC. Rosanne is simply Valerie’s cheer squad. Every villain needs a sidekick.

Laurie-  (3 scenes) 9 or 10 years old and is Donald’s little sister, she’s rough around the edges, small but with a mighty mouth. She's a cranky adult in a child body who can barely tolerate Donald and is seemly the caregiver for their dementia-ridden mother.

Hesther Khan- (8 scenes) 40's, Afghan, Nadima and Dastaan’s mother. She is the glue that struggles to hold together a broken family. She attempts to appease her husband by following old-school traditions. Yet, she feels more attached to western values and identifies with the struggles of her kids. We see she is a chain smoker and closet drinker (to be revealed subtly). She confronts and chastises Nadima, but sympathizes. Eventually, she does stand up to her husband’s abuse but ends up in harm’s way herself.

Amir Khan- (3 scenes) 40-50, Afghan & average. Amir may come across as a one-dimensional character and may be seen as a villain.  Played honestly. he is someone who embraces tradition and sees himself as protecting his family. The strict rules are there for their own good. Amir is mostly an observer. He is either silent or an erupting volcano. He is physically and emotionally abusive. He appears distinguished and educated and successful.

Coach Kojak- (1 scene) A middle-aged high school coach, a former athlete, living on caffeine and cigarettes. Believes he hates his job, though he doesn’t. Gives the impression he doesn’t care, though he does. A bit of an old-school thinker who that believes if kids are going to fight to solve their differences, they should put on gloves and settle them in a ring. Very dry sarcastic sense of humor. He's a large man with the structure of a football player, with the belly of someone who’s missed a few workouts.

Jill Commerford- (2 scenes) 20’s to early ’30s, open ethnicity. She's Educated and confident and not easily intimidated. She’s someone who believes there is good in everyone, even if it’s buried. She reads people well and sympathizes with Jack, even if it means turning his world upside down to put him on track. She is not rattled by Stanley’s bully tactics and has no problem putting him in his place.

School Principal - (1 scene) Man or woman in their 50’s. Distinguished. Very capable and stern and projects a kinglike image. The students fear and respect him/her. The scene in the office with Jack shows a more down-to-earth side. A million Jacks have passed through the office and his/her parting advice is heartfelt. Not given to dramatics and seeing Theresa’s tears and dramatic emotion is more of an annoyance

Tristano- ( 2 Scenes) – 17 years old. 5’8” – 5’10, a gentle giant, gym friend. Very solid and heavily muscled. Good-natured and even-tempered. A friend of Jacks's and Donald’s from the weight room. Not necessarily bodybuilder lean, just big and powerful.

Keith- (2 scenes) Meg’s son &N Jack & Alec’s stepbrother – 10 years old. We briefly see Keith and he’s only sitting at the kitchen table eating and being led out of their house. He’s quiet and sort of just there.

Mr./Mrs. Biggs- (1 scene) Could be male or female. 30’s or 40’s Mr/Mrs. Biggs is loved by his students. Takes teaching very serious. Not a friend of the students, but more good-natured and easy going than many.

Alec Dumbrowski- (1 scene) Jack's older brother. Someone Jack looks up to. We get the sense there was a falling out between Alec and Stanley. We’re never actually told what is wrong with Alec but are led to believe he’s dying of AIDS therefore he's very thin, frail, and emotional. Vernon implies this in the cafeteria as does Tristano while talking to Jack in the shower at the gym. Alec is a good older brother and tries to talk sense into him and get him on the right track. He’s also generous as shown by his giving access to his bank account and car.
